A lot of foreigners come to find a Filipina to love and care for them. we know a lot of foreigners come to take advantage of Filipina girls (that hurts me to, it is sick and I dream of the day that changes). It is said with so much passion and belief that I can see it in their face. In some cases people will be so vocal about it, that it can be uncomfortable.I understand that it would be common to assume that I would be here due to a Filipina. I can see it in the faces of the Filipinos who say those words to me… I will always take time to respond to people who make those comments in a positive way. I think sometimes when I meet girls here my mind goes crazy! For me even though I may only inspire one more person to shift their perspective… maybe it will inspire foreigners who are here for girls (for the wrong reasons) to at THE VERY LEAST respect this culture and these beautiful women. Instantly their minds will drift back to the thought that being with a Filipina is the only reason one would want to stay in the Philippines. These situations and conversations with locals, they really do happen to me quite often. share those reasons first and foremost with foreigners and each other…Now I’d like to share with you a very common conversation I have. It is safe to say that I have interacted with a lot of everyday Filipinos and Filipinas. While looking at the vegetables a few of the vendors said in Bisaya… Again I have nothing wrong with why individuals think that way, because again, yes lots of foreigners who are here do have girlfriends, or wives. Here is a very common first interaction (which I would have in either Bisaya or Tagalog): Why? We all know that a lot of foreigners come to the Philippines because they have met a Filipina, have a Filipina Girlfriend, or have a Filipina Wife. But it occurs EVERY time I am hanging out with a girl who is simply just a friend of mine, and usually in a very open and vocal way; the girls will be stereotyped as being attached to me.
I have met so many talented, caring, friendly, smart, beautiful, amazing Filipinas over the course of my time in the Philippines. of course I have been beyond interested in wanting to get to know some girls better, to get closer to a girl here, and to have a girlfriend. It gives me an opportunity to share and inspire pride in them. It definitely isn’t because I don’t find Filipina’s attractive… Maybe it will empower some Filipina women to not put themselves or foreigners into relationships that may not be positive to be in. I have met so many foreigners who within minutes start asking me about girls.
Here I am a 26yr old foreigner semi-fluent in Bisaya, basic knowledge of Tagalog who is living in the Philippines. I have met some Filipinas that right away make me wish I had the privilege of saying… It helps me inspire some positive thinking in the minds of people I look up to… I have found over the course of my time in the Philippines I have pushed away any opportunity I may have had to date a Filipina and to get close to a Filipina. In fact just a few days ago a foreigner told me: “You must be a big hit with the ladies. Get a few beers in you and I bet all the stories will come out.” Stories of a 26yr old who even though maybe lonely in that aspect of his life, just doesn’t agree with people focusing on being with girls here as being the best part of the Philippines. I completely understand why foreigners talk about the girls here so much, because they are amazing, and yes chances are you will get a lot of attention from them if you are a nice guy. One day we were hanging out looking for ingredients to make some food.
Now if you are Filipino reading this I want you to stop here and think: If you didn’t know me, had no clue what I was doing here in the Philippines. What would your guess be as to how I got here, and why I choose to stay here? We headed to the market in Cebu to pick up fresh vegetables.
There is this complete sense of disbelief when I tell them otherwise. I talk about the amazing little inspiring traits I see in Filipino hearts. I get scared that I will lose that chance to challenge Filipinos to see the other things in their culture that are beautiful.
In some cases people will even start laughing in the sense they really don’t believe it. I talk about the beautiful mountains, rivers, and beaches. The absolutely beautiful culture I continue to learn from. To challenge them to focus on those first and foremost. For all I know I could fall in love with a Danish girl in the Philippines, or a Swedish girl in Canada, or a Filipina in the Canada…
I lose that chance to inspire that positive mindset in someone about Filipino culture. a lot of local everyday Filipinos that I interact with will always believe that was the reason why I was here. Where as if Filipinos push the other simple amazing reasons why one should be proud to call this country home…
